Veneration: Making the Non-Physical, Physical – A Solo Exhibition by Shannah Warwick at 171 Cedar Arts

I am thrilled to announce the opening of my solo exhibition Veneration: Making the Non-Physical, Physical, now on view at the Houghton Gallery at 171 Cedar Arts in Corning, NY, through October 26th, 2024.

For over 20 years, I’ve been working with wool, exploring its endless possibilities through felting techniques such as wet felting, needle felting, and nuno felting. Wool has always captivated me with its versatility, and for this exhibit, I chose to work entirely in white. This monochromatic palette symbolizes the purity of the awakening energy that inspired this project—a form of energy I experience and interpret through my clairvoyant practice as an energy reader. The white wool allowed me to express this energy in a tangible form, inviting viewers to explore themes of consciousness, transformation, and the relationship between our physical and spiritual selves.

Veneration explores the idea that we are far more than just our physical bodies. I use layers of felted wool and sculptural techniques to make the invisible—our energy bodies and souls—visible. Some pieces in the collection emerged from sketches, while others were inspired spontaneously as I worked within this "white awakening energy." My intention throughout the creation process has been to hold space for these energies and to craft works that invite viewers to reflect on their own connection to something beyond the physical.

The Lazarus Installation

One of the key pieces in this exhibition is Lazarus, a soft sculpture created with felted wool and cotton over a sculpted foam shape. This work is an exploration of the fascia layer within the human body—a web of connective tissue believed by some to be where the soul resides. The form in Lazarus imagines what a body might look like as it transitions through death, as the soul and energy body release. Through this piece, I hope to challenge viewers to think about their own mortality and consider the idea that we may be much more than our physical selves.

After Veneration closes at 171 Cedar Arts, Lazarus will be available for future gallery opportunities and collaborations with museums, nonprofits, hospice care facilities, and other organizations interested in exploring themes of life, death, and rebirth.
